Passing a Compliance Test Doesn’t Mean Your Media Beds Are Healthy
In reality, compliance testing measures destruction efficiency. It verifies that the RTO is destroying VOCs and hazardous air pollutants at the required level and meeting the environmental performance standards established by a permit or regulation.
That’s obviously important.
But destruction efficiency is only one measure of RTO performance.
Thermal efficiency is a measure of how effectively the media beds capture, store, and transfer heat from one cycle to the next. Healthy media beds recover most of the heat generated during oxidation and return that energy to the incoming process air stream. The higher the thermal efficiency, the less supplemental fuel is required to maintain operating temperature.Over time, media can become plugged, damaged, contaminated, or unevenly distributed. An RTO may continue to achieve the required destruction efficiency while gradually losing thermal efficiency and increasing operating costs.
• Increased operating costs
• Reduced process stability
• Greater risk of unplanned downtime
• Reduced equipment lifeIn many cases, the first sign of deteriorating media bed health isn’t a failed compliance test. It’s declining thermal efficiency and a fuel bill that’s higher than it should be.
By the time destruction efficiency is affected, media condition may have been declining for years.
That’s why many facilities are moving beyond periodic compliance testing and focusing on continuous performance monitoring. Tracking pressure drop across the media beds and temperatures at multiple media elevations can provide both real-time and long-term insight into media bed health. These measurements often reveal developing issues long before they impact destruction efficiency.
The goal isn’t just compliance.
The goal is maximizing thermal efficiency, minimizing fuel costs, and extending the life of a critical environmental asset.
If an RTO is more than five years old or treating a demanding airstream, it may be worth asking a simple question:
Is the RTO in compliance, or is it truly healthy?
